This project may be completed alone or in groups of 2 or 3. The timeline is approximately 7 classes.
Problem StatementLet's project ourselves 20 years into the future. Downtown Calgary is running out of space to build. We need to find a way to add commercial and private space to this area of the city. Here are 2 key questions to help you create your project:
|
What do we need to consider?
Here is an example of something current in Calgary. Before even being considered for approval, the Calgary NEXT project must create accurage renderings of outside and inside new structures and include all surrounding buildings, toposurface, and transportation. Here is one rendering from the Calgary NEXT website.
Toposurface and Park
Your toposurface should be organic in appearance (land is not blocky and square). It should contain natural surfaces (grass, trees, etc.), man made surfaces like concrete or asphalt, and water, as well as various elevation points.
Park
You will need to design one park, either as a part of your toposurface, or in a separate structure. Be creative! It does not need to be outside. Below is a an elevation view and an artist's rendering of the new Amazon Bubble Biospheres at their Seattle Campus. If you do plan to create an outdoor park, plan carefully, create subregions, use various elevations for your points and add different kinds of trees and surfaces. Plan for how people will walk around, where they will sit etc. Your park must incorporate water, natural surfaces, man made surfaces, and places for people to walk and relax.
Skyscrapers
There should be one skyscraper per group member. Make sure you are entirely aware of the footprint size (so it fits on the toposurface) and height (so the buildings look like they fit together). Consider how you will allow people to stay out of the cold while moving between buildings.
TransportationHow will people move in and out of the downtown core 20 years in the future? You will need to make your solution visible in your project, either through renderings, floor plan, or elevation views. Although I sincerely hope for the ability to beam from one place to another, there is no evidence that this will be at all possible in 20 years. Below is a rendering from Calgary NEXT which shows transportation. This is more realistic!

Presentation and Evaluation
All technical assignments as well as information, planning, and images showcasing your project will be placed on your website. All group work generated needs to be displayed on all members webpages as is all individual work.

Note: This is a presentation project. Make sure all images are in realistic view mode and consider elements and principles of design when taking your pictures. You may include some rendered images as well if you like. All surfaces must have materials applied to them.
